  • The Secret Musical Treasures of Ukraine: From Trampled Manuscripts to Digital Collaboration, with Christina Crowder of The Klezmer Institute

    March 15, 2026 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

The Secret Musical Treasures of Ukraine: From Trampled Manuscripts to Digital Collaboration

A chance encounter in Tokyo a few years ago led to the unlikely release of thousands of unique musical manuscripts in a Kyiv archive previously unavailable to contemporary klezmer musicians and scholars. The Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project (KMDMP) is an international digital humanities project connecting participants with the work of important klezmer musicians from late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.

This presentation will include a brief history of the An-Ski Expeditions, Zusman Kiselgof, and the creation of the archive along with a backstage tour to the KMDMP project and some of the musical highlights that have been discovered along the way. Find out what connects the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Enrico Caruso and the humble klezmer Gershkovitz from Kremenets, Ukraine. We’ll also talk about why this single klezmer is referred to as both “Kommandant” and “Komediant” in Moshe Beregovski’s catalogue of the corpus. This remarkable collection gives us a personal view into the musical life of klezmorim from the beginning of the twentieth century. The work of the project—to digitally transcribe the handwritten music in the collections—has been a tremendous way to connect with musicians from the past and to find new connections and inspiration in the present.

The event will include a visual presentation, some live music, and an invitation to learn a nign from this extraordinary collection!

    Registration required.
